New Delhi, June 27: Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his pride on Friday regarding India's selection as the host nation for the 2029 World Police and Fire Games (WPFG). He described this achievement as a significant acknowledgment of the extensive sports infrastructure developed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

In a post on X, Shah stated, "This is a proud moment for all citizens, as Bharat has been chosen to host the esteemed 2029 World Police and Fire Games. Winning this prestigious bid highlights our impressive sports facilities established under the guidance of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji. The choice of Ahmedabad as the venue for this event, which will see police, fire, and disaster services compete in over 50 sports, underscores the city's growing reputation as a sports hub."

Shah's comments followed an announcement by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who confirmed that the state had won the bid to host this significant international event. CM Patel referred to this achievement as a "major milestone" in establishing Ahmedabad as "the sporting capital of India."

"A proud moment for Gujarat! India has secured the bid to host the 2029 World Police & Fire Games (WPFG) in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar, after a thorough presentation to the WPFG Federation in Birmingham, USA. This global success reflects the visionary leadership of Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi and Hon'ble Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah, marking a significant step towards making Ahmedabad the sporting capital of India!" the Gujarat CM shared on X.

As per the official WPFG website, this competition is akin to the Olympics, featuring athletes from law enforcement, firefighting, and correctional services worldwide. The event occurs biennially and includes over 60 sports as part of its official program.

The California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF), the Host City, and the WPFG Board of Directors oversee the games.

The inaugural edition of this competition took place in 1985 in San Jose, California.
